EXTRACORPOREAL SHOCKWAVE THERAPY

WHAT IS SHOCKWAVE?

Extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) is a non-invasive treatment used by allied health

professionals such as physiotherapists, chiropractors and podiatrists to treat musculoskeletal

conditions. These conditions can range from ligament sprains, muscle strains and certain

bone conditions.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

ESWT uses high frequency ultrasound waves that break up soft tissue calcifications, enhance collagen synthesis to stimulates the body’s healing process and promote tissue repair. In short, it uses micro-trauma to stimulate the body to heal the injured tissue.

WHAT CAN IT TREAT?

As mentioned previously, ESWT can treat a multitude of musculoskeletal conditions. Below are some examples of specific conditions that have shown good results following ESWT therapy:

  • Bursitis

    • Sub-acromial bursitis (shoulder)

    • Greater trochanteric bursitis (hip)

  • Tendon injuries

    • Tendinopathy of the rotator cuff in the shoulder

    • Tendon calcifications

  • Ligament injuries

    • Rolled ankle

  • Muscle strains

  • Overuse injuries

    • De Quervains tenosynovitis

    • Shin splints

    • Iliotibial band (ITB) syndrome

    • Jumper’s knee

    • Plantar fasciitis

  • Certain bone conditions

    • Heel spur

    • Stress fracture

    • Non-union fracture

ARE THERE ANY CONTRAINDICATIONS/PRECAUTIONS?

  • Pregnancy

  • Malignancy

  • Blood clotting disorders

  • Over joint replacements

  • Open wounds

  • Cortisone injections – must wait 6 weeks before commencing shockwave to area

  • Pacemakers

  • Disturbed sensory or nervous function e.g. diabetes

ARE THERE SIDE EFFECTS?

There are minimal side effects to shockwave therapy. Some of the most common include:

  • Redness

  • Bruising

  • Tenderness

IS IT PAINFUL?

Depending on the severity of the condition or the pain tolerance of the patient there can be localised discomfort during ESWT. However, it is important to let your practitioner know if it is too painful as the settings can be adjusted to your tolerance.

HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE? HOW MANY SESSIONS DO I NEED?

Each ESWT session can last up to 10-15 minutes depending on the area being treated. Research has shown the best results in 3-8 sessions with a 3-10 day gap in between each session.
